Ending Unpleasant Situations

Getting Out of Unpleasant Situations

When you are in an unpleasant situation it is easy to panic and loose sight of the one most important fact : what you really want is a solution that will end your current situation. If you make sure you remember this, and then act accordingly, you are bound to find a way out.

Here are some key things to remember.

Key number one : Don't try and pretend that the situation is not unpleasant.

Often this happens, we find excuses like "It's not as bad as all that." and so on. Or we find reasons to justify the situation. I have noticed myself doing this and seen others do it too.

I honestly believe that there is no point in doing so.

Key number two : Get to the bottom of why the situation is unpleasant.

This is an important step that may sound easier than it really is. Often things are not the way they seem. The truth is often paradoxical. Step back from your situation and try and observe it without judgment. Do not try and jump to any conclusions about it, just observe it in every aspect. Make sure your mind and emotions don't start being too noisy and distract you from your task. I have often found that the answer to the question "What is unpleasant about this situation ?" does not come in the form of words. It is often more like an awareness of the situation in all it's aspects, a realization of what is really going on.

Key number three : The solution is your conclusion.

Now I have mentioned that while getting to the bottom of why a situation is unpleasant it is important not to draw conclusions. The reason for this is that when you draw a conclusion you make a choice that affects the way you see the world. If you want to see the solution to your problem (unpleasant situation) appear, then the best thing you can do is picture a solution. Once you are aware of what is unpleasant about your current situation, imagine positive ways in which it can be changed right now. By positive ways I mean ways that you feel good about. Then choose one or several of those ways and make them the conclusion that you draw about your situation.

Key number four : Be brave and take action.

Once you have decided in which way(s) you are going to change your situation, take action. Don't hesitate. If you are sure that you are comfortable with the course of action you have chosen then simply go for it.
